Funchal climbs from the harbour in terraces of whitewashed houses and red rooftops, backed by volcanic peaks. The port terminal is compact, and the city centre is a short walk or taxi ride uphill. The Mercado dos Lavradores, the main market, is piled with tropical fruits, flowers, and fresh fish, including the island's famous black scabbard fish. Blandy's wine lodge offers tastings of Madeira's fortified wines, which age well and make good gifts to bring home. The cable car to Monte gives you a wide view over the city and harbour. The toboggan ride down from Monte, in a wicker sled steered by two men in straw hats, is a Funchal tradition. Câmara de Lobos, a fishing village about 10 minutes by taxi, has colourful boats and seafood restaurants. Espetada (grilled skewered beef) and lapas (grilled limpets) are the local dishes. Taxis are affordable and the hop-on-hop-off bus covers the main sights. Euros are the currency.
