About Bimini

Bimini is a narrow strip of island about 80 km east of Miami, small enough to cover by golf cart in an afternoon. The cruise port is part of the Resorts World Bimini complex, which has a marina, pools, and a casino. Beyond the resort, Alice Town has pastel-painted buildings, a few bars, and a museum dedicated to Hemingway, who spent years fishing here and set parts of Islands in the Stream on Bimini. The SS Sapona, a concrete-hulled ship wrecked in a 1926 hurricane, sits in shallow water offshore and is visible from the beach. Snorkelling around it is easy. The Bimini Road, an underwater formation of flat limestone blocks, attracts divers who like to speculate about Atlantis. For food, conch salad prepared fresh at a roadside stand is the thing to eat. The Fountain of Youth, a freshwater spring in South Bimini's scrubland, is more curiosity than spectacle. US dollars are accepted everywhere and taxis are plentiful.
