Copenhagen manages to feel both old and modern without forcing the contrast. Most cruise ships dock at Oceankaj, from where a shuttle or metro ride brings you to the city centre. Nyhavn, the postcard canal lined with coloured 17th-century townhouses, is always busy but still worth a walk. From there, the Little Mermaid statue is a ten-minute stroll along the harbour, and Tivoli Gardens, the amusement park that inspired Walt Disney, is a short walk in the other direction. Bikes outnumber cars here, and renting one is the fastest way to cover ground. For food, try smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) at a traditional lunch spot or pick up a pølse (hot dog) from a street cart. The Round Tower gives an elevated view of the old city's spires and rooftops. Strøget, one of Europe's longest pedestrian shopping streets, runs through the centre. Christiania, the self-proclaimed free town, is a strange and interesting detour. Danish kroner is the currency, though most places accept cards. English is spoken almost everywhere.
