Newcastle upon Tyne sits on the River Tyne in northeast England, with the cruise berth at Royal Quays Marina about 20 minutes by taxi or shuttle from the city centre. The Quayside area, between the Tyne Bridge and the tilting Gateshead Millennium Bridge, is the main waterfront strip, with restaurants, bars, and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art housed in a converted flour mill. The Castle Keep, a Norman fortress from the 1100s, gives the city its name and offers rooftop views over the river. Grey Street, sometimes rated the finest street in England, runs uphill past Georgian facades and the Theatre Royal to Grey's Monument. Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend marks the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall. For food, the Grainger Market has been trading since 1835 and sells everything from fresh fish to local stottie cake (a round flatbread). Taxis from the cruise terminal run on a fixed rate to the city centre.
