Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote, on the eastern coast of the island. The influence of artist César Manrique is visible in how buildings sit within the volcanic terrain. The city's name means "reef," and the historic centre, with its colourful streets and the saltwater lagoon of El Charco de San Ginés, reflects Lanzarote's fishing heritage. The town centre is easy to reach on foot from either dock. The 16th-century San Gabriel Castle houses an archaeology museum, and the Casa de Los Arroyo is a well-preserved example of traditional Canarian architecture. Manrique's influence extends beyond Arrecife: Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes, lava tube attractions about 30 minutes north, are popular day trips. Local food leans on fresh fish, papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce), and goat's cheese. Buses connect the port to the island's main towns cheaply.
