Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura, the second-largest of the Canary Islands. The town was originally called Puerto de Cabras (Goat Port), and the old name still shows up on some signage. More than 100 outdoor sculptures are scattered through the streets, turning the centre into an open-air gallery. The port is close to the town centre, and whitewashed buildings line the waterfront. Playa Chica, a small beach within walking distance of the dock, has calm water and is good for a quick swim. Fuerteventura is best known for its long, windswept beaches further from town, particularly the dunes at Corralejo in the north. The local food leans on goat cheese (queso majorero), papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, and fresh fish. The euro is the currency, and cafés and shops accept cards.
