Falmouth was one of Jamaica's busiest sugar ports in the 18th century, and its Georgian architecture has been carefully restored. Water Square anchors the historic district, surrounded by the Falmouth Court House and St. Peter's Anglican Church. The gingerbread woodwork on many buildings is original. Ships dock at a purpose-built terminal, and the town centre is a short walk from the pier. Jerk spices hit you before you even see the food stalls. Glistening Waters Lagoon, a short drive from town, has bioluminescent plankton that light up blue when the water is disturbed. Night tours are the best way to see it. Back in town, reggae and steel pan music drift from bars along the waterfront. Local crafts and spices make good souvenirs. The Jamaican dollar is official currency, but US dollars are accepted everywhere. Stick to main areas after dark and negotiate taxi fares before getting in.
