Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands, a hilly island with a sheltered harbour at Road Town. The port area has a few shops and bars, and the town itself is small and quiet compared to nearby St. Thomas. The main draws are the beaches and the sailing. Cane Garden Bay, on the north side, has a long arc of sand with beach bars and calm water. Smuggler's Cove, at the far western end, is less developed and usually quieter. The Baths on neighbouring Virgin Gorda, a collection of enormous granite boulders forming sea-level caves and pools, are reachable by ferry or water taxi. Tortola's roads are steep and winding, and driving is on the left. Local rum is sold everywhere, and Pusser's, a brand with roots in the Royal Navy rum ration, has a bar in Road Town. The currency is the US dollar despite being a British territory. Taxi fares are fixed and posted at the port.
