Dubrovnik's medieval walls rise straight from the Adriatic, their limestone glowing amber in the afternoon sun. Ships dock at Port Gruž, across the bay from the Old Town. The Pile Gate is the main entrance, and inside, the Stradun promenade runs the length of the walled city past Baroque churches and Renaissance palaces. Walking the full circuit of the walls takes about 90 minutes with uninterrupted sea views. The cable car up Mount Srđ is another option for seeing things from above. Fort Lovrijenac, just outside the walls, doubled as the Red Keep in Game of Thrones. Black risotto made with cuttlefish ink is the local specialty, and peka (slow-cooked meat under a domed lid) is worth seeking out. Rožata, a caramel custard with citrus, is the go-to dessert. Shops in the Old Town sell lavender products, handmade jewellery, and Maraschino liqueur. Wear comfortable shoes because the streets are cobblestone and uphill in places.
