The approach into Kotor's bay is one of the best in cruising. Mountains rise steeply from the water on both sides as the ship navigates the narrow inlet. The old town is a compact, walled medieval quarter right at the water's edge, with cobbled alleys, stone churches, and small squares. If your ship docks at the pier, you walk straight in. If it anchors, tenders bring you to the same spot. The climb to San Giovanni Fortress takes about 1,300 steps and rewards you with views over the entire bay. The Church of Our Lady of Remedy sits at a midway point if you want the views without the full climb. A boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks, a man-made island with a church, is a short excursion. Perast, nearby, has Venetian palaces along the waterfront. For food, try njeguški pršut (smoked ham) or fresh seafood with a glass of rakija. The euro is the currency.
