Katakolon is a small port town on Greece's Peloponnese coast, home to about 600 people. The waterfront has pastel houses, a few tavernas, and fishing boats in the harbour. The 1865 lighthouse at the edge of town still stands. Most people come here for one reason: Ancient Olympia, about 30 minutes inland by bus or taxi, where the ruins of the original Olympic stadium and the Sanctuary of Zeus sit among pine and olive trees. The archaeological museum at Olympia has original sculptures from the Temple of Zeus and is worth the visit. If you'd rather stay near the port, Plakes Beach is a pebbly cove 200 metres from the dock with clear water and a beach bar. Waterfront tavernas serve grilled sardines, octopus, and fava dip with local Peloponnese wine. The euro is the currency. Horse-drawn cart rides through town are available if your legs need a rest.
