Rábida is one of the smaller, less-visited islands in the Galápagos, recognisable by its dark red sand beach, coloured by oxidised iron in the volcanic rock. The landing is a wet one, directly onto the beach, where sea lions usually occupy the best spots. Brown pelicans nest in the salt bushes just behind the beach, and the snorkelling offshore is good, with reef sharks, rays, and large schools of tropical fish in the clear water. A short trail leads inland from the beach through low scrubland to a viewpoint. The island has no permanent residents and no facilities. Bring water, sun protection, and reef-safe sunscreen. A park-certified naturalist guide accompanies every visit and will point out species you might miss on your own. Rábida tends to be quieter than the more popular visitor sites, which is part of its appeal.
