Kahului's port is industrial, and there isn't much to see within walking distance. The town of Wailuku nearby has local shops and restaurants, and the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center is about a mile away for bigger stores. Maui's real attractions are all outside Kahului, so plan on a car rental or organised tour. Book either one well in advance since cruise ship days get competitive. Haleakalā National Park is the main draw: you can hike the volcanic crater or drive to the summit for the views. The Road to Hana follows the coast through waterfalls and small towns and takes most of a day. Closer to port, 'Īao Valley State Park has the striking 'Īao Needle basalt formation. Try fresh poke bowls, plate lunches, or shave ice from roadside stands. Public transport on Maui is limited, so your own wheels make a big difference.
