Kailua-Kona sits on Hawaii Island's western coast, where the Hualalai volcano rises behind a strip of small beaches and the town's main street. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the Kona Pier, which puts you right in the middle of the waterfront shops and restaurants. The water is calm on this side of the island, and snorkelling spots are within a short drive. Kealakekua Bay, where Captain Cook was killed in 1779, has some of the best snorkelling on the island with spinner dolphins often in the bay. Kona coffee farms in the hills above town offer tours and tastings. For food, try the poke from a grocery deli counter or a plate lunch from a local spot. Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, a restored refuge site, is worth the 30-minute drive south. The Big Island is big, so plan accordingly.
