Kochi (also called Cochin) sits on India's southwestern coast in Kerala. The Chinese fishing nets along the waterfront at Fort Kochi are the first thing most people photograph. They're cantilevered wooden rigs that have been used since the 14th century, and fishermen still operate them daily. The neighbourhood around them has Portuguese churches, a Dutch palace, a Jewish synagogue, and Hindu temples within walking distance of each other. The spice markets in Mattancherry sell cardamom, cinnamon, pepper, and turmeric in bulk quantities, and the smell is overpowering in the best way. Kathakali dance performances, with their elaborate face paint and costumes, run in the evenings at several cultural centres. Kerala cuisine features coconut-based curries, appam (rice pancakes), and fresh fish. Tuk-tuks are the cheapest way to get around but agree on a fare before getting in. The Kerala backwaters are accessible as a day trip by houseboat.
