Malé is the capital of the Maldives, packed onto an island roughly 2km by 1km. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the waterfront. The city is dense, with narrow streets and colourful buildings stacked alongside mosques and markets. The Grand Friday Mosque, with its golden dome, is the most prominent building. The Old Friday Mosque, built from coral stone in 1658, is a UNESCO-listed site. The Local Market and Fish Market on the waterfront are worth visiting for the atmosphere: tuna is sold in large quantities and processed on the spot. Sultan Park has some green space in the otherwise built-up city. Most people visiting the Maldives are headed for the resort islands, but Malé gives a more grounded view of the country. Snorkelling trips to nearby reefs can be arranged from the pier. Dress modestly since it's a conservative Muslim city. The Maldivian Rufiyaa is the currency, though US dollars are accepted at many shops.
