About Miyako-Iwate

Miyako is a coastal city in Iwate Prefecture on Japan's northeast Pacific coast, known for the Jodogahama beach, a stretch of white pebble shore backed by jagged white rock formations and pine trees. The name means "Pure Land Beach," a reference to a Buddhist priest who compared the view to paradise. The rocks and clear green water make it one of the most scenic spots on the Sanriku Coast. The city was hit hard by the 2011 tsunami, and the reconstruction is visible along the waterfront. The Taro Tsunami Observation Centre, north of the city, documents the impact and the region's long history of dealing with tsunamis. Local seafood is excellent, particularly uni (sea urchin) harvested from the cold Sanriku waters. Miyako is quiet, the infrastructure is functional rather than polished, and the main appeal is the natural coastline and the fresh seafood you can eat right at the port market.
