Sendai is the largest city in the Tohoku region of northern Japan, about 300km north of Tokyo. Ships dock at Sendai-Shiogama Port, and shuttles or trains connect to the city centre. The city is called the City of Trees because of the zelkova-lined avenues, particularly along Jozenji-dori, which is covered by a green canopy in summer. Zuihoden, the mausoleum of Date Masamune (the feudal lord who founded Sendai), is an ornate building with gold detailing set in a forested hillside. Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle) ruins sit on a hill above the city with views and a statue of Date Masamune on horseback. Matsushima Bay, about 30 minutes away, has over 200 pine-covered islands and is considered one of Japan's three most scenic views. Gyutan (grilled beef tongue) is Sendai's signature dish, served at restaurants throughout the city. The Japanese Yen is the currency.
