La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur, sitting on the Sea of Cortez. Ships dock at Pichilingue, about 20 minutes from the city centre by bus or taxi. The Malecón, a waterfront promenade lined with marine sculptures, runs along the bay and is the best place to walk at sunset. The city has a quieter, more local feel than the resort towns further south on the peninsula. Balandra Beach, about 30 minutes from town, has shallow turquoise water and a distinctive mushroom-shaped rock formation. Snorkelling with sea lions at Los Islotes is a popular half-day trip. Espíritu Santo Island, a UNESCO site, has kayaking, hiking, and camping. From December to April, grey whales gather in Magdalena Bay, about three hours away. Fish tacos are the standard meal, and Mercado Bravo has fresh ceviche and local produce. US dollars are widely accepted, and tipping 10-15% is customary.
