About Kristiansund

Kristiansund sits on four islands on Norway's western coast, connected by tunnels and bridges. The city was rebuilt after heavy bombing in 1940, and the colourful buildings along the waterfront earned it the name "the polychrome city." Klippfisk (dried and salted cod) has been the town's main trade for centuries, and the scent of fish still hangs in the harbour air. The quay where cruise ships dock has been receiving vessels for over 300 years. The Sundbåten, running since 1776, is the world's oldest public ferry service and connects the city's four islands. The Norwegian Clipfish Museum, in a 1749 warehouse, covers the cod trade's history. The Atlantic Ocean Road, a series of bridges spanning the open sea between small islands, is about 30 minutes away and is one of Norway's most photographed drives. In town, harbourfront restaurants serve klippfisk prepared various ways and fresh Arctic char. The city is compact and best explored on foot.
