Leknes sits on Vestvågøy Island in the Lofoten archipelago, an area of jagged granite peaks, turquoise water, and red wooden fishing cabins. The port gives access to landscapes that look more like the Tropics than the Arctic, despite being well above the Arctic Circle. There's limited infrastructure at the pier itself, so most exploration requires transport. Haukland Beach and Uttakleiv Beach nearby have white sand and clear water set against mountain backdrops. Nusfjord, a preserved fishing village further south on the island, charges a small entry fee and gives a sense of how these communities operated for centuries. The Viking Museum at Borg has a reconstructed longhouse based on the largest ever found in Scandinavia. Dried stockfish hanging on wooden racks is a common sight along the roads. The Norwegian krone is the currency, and driving or guided tours are the practical way to see the islands.
