Tromsø sits on an island above the Arctic Circle, connected to the mainland by two bridges. Snow-covered mountains ring the city, and the fjord runs right past the centre. The Arctic Cathedral, a triangular concrete structure from 1965, is the most recognisable building and faces the water. The Polar Museum covers the history of Arctic hunting and exploration. Between September and March, the Northern Lights are visible on clear nights. The gondola to Storsteinen, a mountain above town, gives a wide view of the surrounding peaks and islands. In summer, the midnight sun means daylight around the clock. The Mack Brewery, formerly the northernmost brewery in the world, is still operating and has a taproom. Reindeer stew and stockfish are the local dishes. The town centre is walkable, with wooden houses and university buildings side by side. Norwegian krone is the currency, and English is widely spoken.
