Apia, the capital of Samoa, is on the northern coast of Upolu Island. This harbour town is framed by green mountains and the Pacific, and the pier is about a 20-minute walk from the centre. The city has colourful markets, friendly locals, and a steady hum of island life. Traditional Samoan music and the scent of tropical flowers are part of the atmosphere. The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum at Vailima covers the life of the Scottish author, who spent his final years in Samoa. A short hike leads to his resting place on Mount Vaea, with views of the harbour. To Sua Ocean Trench is a 30-metre-deep swimming hole that's worth the trip. The Fugalei Market sells fresh tropical fruit, siapo (tapa cloth), and hand-carved kava bowls. Local favourites include palusami, taro leaves stuffed with coconut cream and meat.
