Koh Samui is an island in the Gulf of Thailand where cruise ships anchor offshore near Nathon, the oldest town, and tender passengers ashore. The island has coconut palms, golden beaches, and warm water year-round. Nathon itself has a few shops and market stalls but most people head elsewhere on the island for the day. Chaweng Beach on the east coast is the busiest stretch of sand with restaurants and bars. Lamai Beach is slightly quieter. The Big Buddha temple (Wat Phra Yai) sits on a small connected island at the northeast corner and is free to visit. Ang Thong National Marine Park, a group of 42 islands accessible by boat, has good snorkelling and kayaking. Thai massage parlours are everywhere and cheap. Street food includes pad thai, green curry, and fresh coconut. The Thai baht is the currency, and bargaining is expected at markets.
