Phuket is Thailand's largest island, sitting in the Andaman Sea. Ships either dock at Phuket Deep Sea Port or tender from an offshore anchorage, depending on the vessel. The port area is industrial, so most people head out by taxi or minibus to the beaches and attractions. Patong Beach is the busiest and most developed strip, with hotels, bars, and water sports operators. Kata and Karon are quieter alternatives with good swimming. Phuket Old Town has Sino-Portuguese shophouses, street art, and Thalang Road with its restaurants. Phang Nga Bay, famous for its limestone karsts and James Bond Island, is a popular boat trip of about half a day. Wat Chalong is the island's most important temple. Thai massage is cheap and available everywhere. Street food is excellent and inexpensive: try pad thai, green curry, and mango sticky rice. The Thai Baht is the currency.
