Key West is the southernmost point of the continental United States, about 90 miles from Cuba. Ships dock at Mallory Square or the Truman Annex, and the whole town is walkable from either. The streets are narrow, shaded by palms, and lined with pastel-painted wooden houses in the Conch style. Hemingway's house, with its population of six-toed cats, is a steady draw. Mallory Square hosts a nightly sunset celebration with street performers, food vendors, and cocktails. Duval Street runs the length of the old town and has bars, restaurants, and shops. The Fort Zachary Taylor beach has the clearest water on the island and is good for snorkelling. Rent a bicycle or scooter for the day rather than a car, as parking is tight and distances are short. Key lime pie is the obligatory dessert, and most places do it well.
