Ancona is a historic Adriatic port built on a promontory overlooking the sea. Greek settlers founded it in the 4th century BC, and the city's name comes from the Greek word for "elbow," describing the shape of the harbour. The ship docks at XXIX Settembre Pier, close to the town centre. The Arch of Trajan, a well-preserved Roman triumphal arch, is one of the first landmarks you see. The Cathedral of San Ciriaco, with its Romanesque façade, sits above the city with wide views. The old town has narrow alleys and historic buildings, and the Piazza del Plebiscito is the main gathering spot. The National Archaeological Museum of the Marche Region has artifacts from prehistoric relics to Roman bronzes. Nearby Passetto Beach offers a swim in the Adriatic, and local specialties include ciauscolo (spreadable salami), olive ascolane, and Fossa cheese.
