Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the Balearic Islands, and ships dock close to the city centre. La Seu Cathedral, built from golden sandstone, sits above the waterfront and is visible from the harbour approach. The interior was partially redesigned by Gaudí. The Passeig Marítim promenade runs along the waterfront with marina views, and the old town climbs uphill behind the cathedral. The old town has narrow streets, courtyards hidden behind wooden doors, and a mix of Moorish and Gothic architecture. The Banys Àrabs (Arab Baths) date from the 10th century. The Mercado del Olivar is the main food market with fresh produce and seafood. For beaches, Playa de Palma is a long stretch of sand east of the city, reachable by bus. Ensaïmada, a coiled pastry dusted with powdered sugar, is the traditional Mallorcan pastry. Tapas and seafood dominate the restaurant menus. The euro is the currency.
