You get off in San Diego, which is a good excuse to tack on a few days on land. The sea days come first, which means no rushing to get off the ship on day one. You hit the ports relaxed and ready. The route threads through 6 countries along the Mexican Riviera & Central America coast: Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico and United States. Don't rush through San Diego, which is known as America's finest city, bathed in sunshine. With about 8 hours at each port, you'll want a plan, or at least a shortlist. Zaandam has 6 restaurants on board, which means you could eat somewhere different nearly every night. With more nights comes more time for the ship's rhythm to kick in: morning coffee in the same spot, evening shows, late-night conversations on deck. Fort Lauderdale itself is worth spending some time in. Don't just treat it as a departure point. And March is a good time to go. Mild weather, things starting to bloom, and fewer people than summer.
