Icy Strait Point

Icy Strait Point sits on Chichagof Island, about a mile from the Tlingit village of Hoonah. It's a purpose-built cruise port that still feels remote. Humpback whales surface in the strait regularly, and the surrounding forest smells of pine and saltwater. The Adventure Center near the dock offers activities ranging from the ZipRider, a 1,300-foot zipline with views over the coastline, to kayaking in the protected waters of Port Frederick. Brown bear viewing excursions are one of Chichagof Island's best draws, as the island has one of the highest bear densities in the world. The restored Hoonah Packing Company Cannery shows the history of Alaska's canning industry and serves fresh local salmon. The Native Heritage Center hosts Tlingit drumming, dancing, and storytelling. The walk to Hoonah is about 1.5 miles along a scenic road, though shuttles run too. Bring cash for smaller vendors.
