Juneau is Alaska's capital, and the only way to reach it is by sea or air since there are no roads in. Ships dock at one of three terminals near the city centre, and the waterfront is within walking distance. The town sits between steep mountains and the Gastineau Channel, with the Tongass National Forest pressing in from all sides. Tour booths and Native Alaskan art shops line the main strip. Mendenhall Glacier, about 12 miles from downtown, is the most popular excursion and can be reached by shuttle or taxi. Whale-watching tours run from the harbour and have a high success rate for humpback sightings. For something closer to town, the Mount Roberts Tramway takes you up 1,800 feet to alpine meadows and an eagle viewing area. Red Dog Saloon on the waterfront has been serving drinks since the gold rush days and is worth a stop for the atmosphere.
