Tracy Arm Fjord is a narrow inlet about 80 kilometres south of Juneau in Alaska's Inside Passage. Ships enter the fjord slowly, passing granite walls that rise hundreds of metres on both sides, with waterfalls pouring off the cliffs into the dark water. At the far end, the Sawyer Glaciers (North and South) calve chunks of ice into the fjord with audible cracks and splashes. Icebergs in various shades of white and blue float in the water throughout. This is a scenic cruising stop, not a port call, so you stay aboard and watch from the deck or your cabin balcony. Binoculars are useful for spotting mountain goats on the cliff ledges, bald eagles in the trees, and harbour seals hauled out on the ice. The light is best on clear mornings, though overcast conditions add atmosphere. The ship's naturalist, if there is one, will narrate over the PA system. Dress warmly for time on deck, even in summer.
