Adelaide is laid out on a grid surrounded by parkland, so it's easy to navigate and hard to get lost. North Terrace has the main cultural institutions lined up in a row: the art gallery, museum, and state library, all free to enter. The Central Market, running since 1869, is the best food stop: cheese, olives, local wine, and pie floaters (a meat pie sitting in pea soup, which is very much an Adelaide thing). Glenelg beach is a short tram ride from the city centre and has a pleasant if unremarkable seaside strip. The real selling point for a longer visit is the wine country nearby: Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale are both within an hour's drive and produce some of Australia's best shiraz. Cleland Wildlife Park in the hills above the city lets you hand-feed kangaroos, which is hard to pass up if you haven't done it before.
