Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island sits off the coast of South Australia, and ships anchor at Penneshaw where you tender to a small town of about 1,500 people. The island is often described as a zoo without fences, which isn't far off. Kangaroos, koalas, and echidnas are commonly spotted from the road, and the Seal Bay Conservation Park has a colony of Australian sea lions you can walk among with a guide. Flinders Chase National Park on the western end has the Remarkable Rocks, a cluster of weather-sculpted granite boulders on a coastal headland, and Admirals Arch, a natural rock bridge with a colony of New Zealand fur seals underneath. The island also produces good wine, honey, and sheep's milk cheese. Distances between sites are large and roads are mixed quality, so a guided tour or rental car with a full tank is essential.
