Kangaroo Island sits off the coast of South Australia, and ships anchor at Penneshaw where you tender to a small town of about 1,500 people. The island is often described as a zoo without fences, which isn't far off. Kangaroos, koalas, and echidnas are commonly spotted from the road, and the Seal Bay Conservation Park has a colony of Australian sea lions you can walk among with a guide.
