Alotau is on the shores of Milne Bay, in Papua New Guinea's southeast. The port town has a colourful harbour and a relaxed atmosphere, and it's a good starting point for reaching the region's remote islands. The surrounding hills and rainforest start just past the town's edge. The Alotau Market smells of tropical fruit and is full of handwoven baskets and carved wooden masks. The Milne Bay Provincial Cultural Centre has Trobriand Islands wood carvings and other regional art. For history, the WWII memorials, including the Turners Memorial, mark the Battle of Milne Bay, where Australian forces won their first land victory over the Japanese in the Pacific. The waters of Milne Bay are clear for snorkelling. Cultural "Sing-Sing" performances with costumes, body paint, drumming, and chanting are arranged for visitors. Taxis and mini-buses are available for getting around.
