Kiriwina is the largest of the Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea, a flat coral island with villages scattered among coconut palms. The islands were studied extensively by anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski in the early 1900s, and many of the cultural practices he documented still continue. Kula ring gift exchange, yam festivals, and cricket matches played with local rules are part of daily life. The island's woodcarvers produce detailed ebony carvings, and shell jewellery and woven baskets are also sold directly by artisans. Snorkelling off the reef is excellent, with warm clear water. Food is simple: fresh fish, coconut-based dishes, and tropical fruit. English is widely spoken alongside the local Kilivila language. Ask permission before photographing people or villages, as it's considered respectful. Getting around is on foot, by canoe, or with a local guide. The island has limited infrastructure, so bring everything you'll need from the ship.
