Dravuni Island is a small island in Fiji's Kadavu group, home to a single village of about 200 people. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the beach. There are no resorts or hotels, just the village, a few stalls set up for cruise visitors, and a lot of empty white sand. The Astrolabe Reef wraps around the island, and the snorkelling directly off the beach is some of the best in Fiji. A short hike up the island's central hill gives a 360-degree view over the lagoon and surrounding islands. Villagers often perform a meke (traditional dance with drumming) and may invite groups to a sevusevu, a kava welcome ceremony where you sit cross-legged and clap once before drinking. Handmade crafts like woven mats, baskets, and wooden carvings are sold at the beachside stalls. English is widely spoken. Bring cash in small Fijian dollar notes. Saying "vinaka" (thank you) goes a long way. The island has no shops, no WiFi, and no rush, which is exactly why it works as a stop.
