Lautoka is Fiji's second-largest city, known locally as Sugar City for the cane fields that surround it. Royal palm trees line the main street, Vitogo Parade, and the town has a clean, well-kept feel. The port is within walking distance of the centre. The Lautoka Municipal Market sells fresh produce, spices, and handmade crafts in a large open-air hall. The Garden of the Sleeping Giant, originally a private orchid collection, has trails through tropical vegetation and is a calm spot away from town. Day trips to the Mamanuca or Yasawa island groups for snorkelling and beach time are popular and bookable from the port. The Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple is one of the largest Hindu temples in the Southern Hemisphere, reflecting Fiji's significant Indo-Fijian population. For food, try kokoda (raw fish in coconut cream) or a traditional lovo feast cooked underground. The Fijian dollar is the currency, and a cheerful "Bula!" goes a long way.
