Savusavu is a small harbour town on the southern coast of Vanua Levu, Fiji's second-largest island. Ships anchor offshore and tender to the Copra Shed Marina. The town has one main street with a few shops, a market, and hot springs where steam vents bubble through the ground near the waterfront. Locals sometimes use the geothermal heat for cooking. J. Hunter Pearls, a pearl farm across the bay, offers tours showing how Fiji's black pearls are cultivated. Rainbow Reef, between Vanua Levu and Taveuni, is one of the world's top dive sites but requires a boat to reach. Smaller snorkelling trips operate closer to town. Vuadomo Waterfall, inland, has a jungle-ringed pool for swimming. The Savusavu Market sells tropical fruit, root vegetables, and handicrafts. Try kokoda (raw fish in coconut cream) or lovo-cooked food. The Fijian Dollar is the currency.
