Trondheim was founded in 997 AD as Norway's first capital. Nidaros Cathedral, a Gothic church built over the burial site of Saint Olav, is the most important building in the city and the traditional coronation church of Norwegian kings. The Archbishop's Palace next door houses the Crown Jewels. Across the Old Town Bridge, the Bakklandet neighbourhood has cobbled streets, brightly painted wooden houses, small shops, and cafés. Kristiansten Fortress, on the hill above Bakklandet, has open grounds and views over the city and the Trondheimsfjord. Rockheim, the national popular music museum, is in a converted grain warehouse on the waterfront. The city has a large student population, which keeps the restaurant and bar scene lively. Fresh salmon, cod, and traditional kjøttkaker (meat cakes) are common on menus. The city is flat and walkable. Bikes are available from May to October. Norwegian krone is the currency.
