Honningsvåg sits on the island of Magerøya, where the Barents Sea meets the Arctic. The town is small and compact, with colourful wooden houses around a deep-water harbour used by fishing boats and cruise ships alike. The main reason people come here is the North Cape, 34 kilometres away, where the cliffs drop straight into the sea and in summer the sun never sets. The drive there crosses a stark, treeless plateau that feels genuinely remote. In town, the North Cape Museum covers the area's fishing and wartime history. The waterfront has a few cafés and gift shops, and you can buy fresh king crab from local sellers. Reindeer often wander near the roads outside town. If you visit between mid-May and late July, the midnight sun means constant daylight, which takes some getting used to. Dress warmly regardless of the season, as the wind off the Barents Sea cuts through most layers.
