Longyearbyen sits on Svalbard, about 78°N, making it one of the northernmost settlements in the world. The town has around 2,500 residents and was originally a coal mining settlement. The landscape is treeless, with glaciated mountains rising behind the town and fjords stretching outward. Ships dock at a pier, and shuttles run the short distance into the centre. Polar bears live in the area, and carrying a rifle outside town limits is a legal requirement. The Svalbard Museum covers the archipelago's polar exploration history, mining heritage, and Arctic ecology. The Global Seed Vault is built into the mountainside but isn't open to visitors beyond the entrance area. Dog sledding and snowmobile excursions run in the appropriate seasons. Kayaking in the fjords offers a chance to see glaciers and seals. Longyearbyen is tax-free, so shopping is cheaper than mainland Norway. Fresh reindeer and Arctic char appear on restaurant menus. Norwegian krone is the currency.
