Lembar is the main port on Lombok's west coast, about 22km south of Senggigi and 40km from Mataram, the island's capital. The port area is basic, and most people arrange transport in advance or take a taxi onward. Lombok sits east of Bali and has a similar climate but fewer tourists and a predominantly Muslim culture compared to Bali's Hindu traditions. The Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno, and Air) are accessible by boat from the northwest coast and are popular for snorkelling, diving, and beach time. Mount Rinjani, Lombok's active volcano, is a serious multi-day trek. Kuta Beach on the south coast (different from Bali's Kuta) has dramatic surf and quieter sand. Warungs (roadside food stalls) serve ayam taliwang (spicy grilled chicken) and fresh seafood. The Indonesian Rupiah is the currency. Bargaining is expected at markets. A few words of Indonesian help.
