Celukan Bawang is a working port on Bali's quieter northern coast, far removed from the tourist crowds of Seminyak and Kuta. The harbour handles cargo, but step past the gates and the countryside opens up: emerald rice terraces, black volcanic sand beaches, and villages where temple ceremonies still set the daily rhythm. From here, Lovina Beach is a short drive east along the coast, with calm waters good for snorkelling. Inland, Gitgit Waterfall drops through dense jungle, and the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple sits on the edge of Lake Beratan. Singaraja, Bali's old colonial capital, is nearby and worth a stop for its crumbling Dutch architecture and the royal palace Puri Agung Beleleng. Coffee lovers should try the Munduk highland plantations. Roadside warungs serve nasi campur and crispy lawar at low prices, and local artisans sell silver jewellery and wood carvings. Carry cash for the smaller shops. Locals are friendly and often keen to practise their English over a cup of Balinese coffee.
