Norfolk, Virginia, is a navy town at its core. The world's largest naval base, Naval Station Norfolk, sits just north of the city, and you can see carriers and destroyers from the waterfront. The USS Wisconsin, a retired Iowa-class battleship, is moored at Nauticus, a science and maritime museum on the downtown harbour. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum, inside the same complex, covers the area's military history from the Civil War onward. The Chrysler Museum of Art has a surprisingly strong collection, including a large glass gallery. The Ghent neighbourhood, a short walk from the waterfront, has older homes, independent coffee shops, and a few good restaurants. Virginia crab cakes and she-crab soup are the local specialities and worth trying at one of the waterfront spots. Water taxis, rideshares, and regular taxis all operate around the port area, making it easy to get around without a car.
