Corner Brook sits on the Bay of Islands in western Newfoundland, with the tail end of the Appalachian range rising behind the town. The port is close to the city centre, and free shuttles run to City Hall and the main street. Captain James Cook charted this bay in the 1760s, and the landscape hasn't changed much since: forested hillsides, rocky shoreline, and cold clear water. The Corner Brook Museum covers the town's history as a paper-mill community, and the Marble Mountain ski area doubles as a hiking trail in summer with views over the Humber River valley. Gros Morne National Park is about 90 minutes north and is the big draw for excursion-goers. Its fjords, tablelands, and ancient rock formations earned it UNESCO status. Closer to town, the Margaret Bowater Park trail network runs along the river. Seafood is the thing to eat: fresh cod, snow crab, and toutons (fried dough) with molasses for breakfast. Locals speak with the distinctive Newfoundland accent and are genuinely friendly. Dress in layers, even in summer.
