About St. Anthony

St. Anthony sits near the northern tip of Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. The town is small, with a population of about 2,500, and the port area is close to the centre. The main reasons to stop here are the Viking history and the icebergs that drift south through Iceberg Alley between May and July. L'Anse aux Meadows, about 45 minutes north, is a UNESCO site with the remains of a Viking settlement from around 1000 AD, the only confirmed Norse site in North America. The reconstructed sod buildings give a sense of how they lived. The Grenfell Interpretation Centre covers the work of Dr. Wilfred Grenfell, a British doctor who established medical services for remote communities in the early 1900s. Boat tours for iceberg and whale watching run from the harbour. Fishing Point Lighthouse has coastal views. The Canadian dollar is the currency.
