St. John's is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, sitting on the eastern edge of North America. The harbour is protected by a narrow gap in the hills called the Narrows. Ships dock right in the city. The colourful row houses of Jellybean Row along the downtown streets are the most photographed feature. Signal Hill, above the Narrows, is where Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901. The Cabot Tower at the summit has views over the city and coastline. Cape Spear, about 15 minutes south, is the easternmost point of North America and has a lighthouse. George Street downtown has the highest concentration of bars per square foot in North America, and the nightlife is famous. For food, try fish and chips with cod (the traditional Newfoundland fish), toutons (fried dough with molasses), or a Jiggs dinner (a boiled dinner with salt beef). The Canadian dollar is the currency.
